Donna posed beginning with five, one-minute poses, some five-minute poses and several twenty-minute poses. On breaks we looked at a few books:
Nicolaides, The Natural Way to Draw
Dodson, Keys to Drawing,

This drawing shows measurements on the right side which were used to establish the proportions of the figure. Tic marks above the head and below the feet define the limits of the drawing. The drawing is then subdivided in half and then in quarters to establish rough guesses as to where these marks lie. Then the drawing is built with construction lines, verticals, horizontals and various obliques which create an armature on which to hang patterns of light, shade and shadow.
Other drawing approaches which we discussed included, contour, gesture and modeled drawing.
We began class by looking at a drawing made outside of class as an assignment. The student drew her sewing machine.
